Terms of Service

Last updated: April 16, 2026

Poetmap is a community project dedicated to mapping the world's poets. By using it, you agree to keep contributions accurate, respectful, and in the spirit of that mission.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Poetmap at poetmap.veillax.com ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2. Description of the Service

Poetmap is an open-source, community-maintained cartographic database of poets - documenting where they were born, lived, worked, and died. The Service allows registered users to submit new entries and curators to review submissions before they go live.

3. Accounts

You may sign in using your Google or GitHub account. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. You agree to:

  • Provide accurate information when prompted
  • Not share your account credentials
  • Notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access to your account

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

4. User Contributions

When you submit a poet entry or other content ("Contribution"), you represent that:

  • The information is accurate to the best of your knowledge
  • You have the right to submit it (e.g. you are not copying proprietary databases verbatim)
  • The Contribution does not contain misinformation, personal attacks, or content designed to harm any individual

By submitting a Contribution, you grant Poetmap a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display, and distribute that Contribution as part of the open dataset, including after account deletion (though disassociated from your identity upon request).

Poetmap and its curators reserve the right to edit, reject, or remove any Contribution at their discretion.

5. Prohibited Conduct

You agree not to:

  • Submit false, fabricated, or deliberately misleading information
  • Scrape or bulk-download the dataset in ways that harm service performance
  • Attempt to access areas of the service you are not authorised to access (e.g. admin routes)
  • Use the Service for any commercial purpose without prior written permission
  • Impersonate another person or entity
  • Use automated scripts to submit contributions without prior approval

6. Intellectual Property

The Poetmap codebase is open-source under the Apache-2.0 licence. The underlying data contributed by the community is intended to remain freely available.

Biographical facts about public figures (birth dates, places, etc.) are not themselves copyrightable. However, original written biographies submitted to Poetmap are contributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence unless otherwise noted.

7. Third-Party Services

The Service uses the following third-party services:

  • Google OAuth / GitHub OAuth - for authentication
  • OpenStreetMap / Leaflet - for map tiles and geocoding
  • Tianji (self-hosted) - for analytics

Use of these services is subject to their respective terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the practices of third-party services.

8. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the data it contains is accurate or complete. Poetmap is a community project - all data should be independently verified before being relied upon for scholarly or professional purposes.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Poetmap and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising out of or related to your use of the Service, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

10. Changes to the Service and Terms

We reserve the right to modify or discontinue the Service at any time. We may also update these Terms. The "Last updated" date at the top indicates the most recent revision. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. Any disputes arising from these Terms or use of the Service shall be resolved in the appropriate jurisdiction of the operator's location.

12. Contact

Questions about these Terms can be raised by opening an issue on the project's GitHub repository or contacting the administrator via details listed there.
